The Waltz

The Waltz was conceived in Germany sometime around the 17th century. It is said to have been based on a folk dance known as the “Lander.” Originally known as the “Walzer,” it spread to France – and then the rest of the world – thanks to Napoleon’s invading army. The Viennese Waltz is recognized as the original form of the Waltz. Today, though, there are other versions like the International Waltz and American Style Waltz.

When to Dance the Waltz

The Viennese Waltz is very quick, but more modern Waltz versions are performed at slower tempos. The contemporary styles also have varied dance positions. The Waltz requires a lot of floor space – regardless of the pace that you choose. It’s best for locations with large dance floors.
