The Lindy Hop
The Lindy Hop is a form a Swing dance that originated in Harlem, New York City. It’s an exuberant, lively dance based on both European and African dance traditions. It was most popular from the 1920s to 1940s, when dancers would modify the dance to fit hot Jazz and Big Band music. The Lindy Hop made a resurgence in the ‘80s, and it is still popular throughout Swing clubs all over the world.
When to Dance the Lindy Hop
Since the revival of Swing in the ‘80s, the Lindy Hop has become a widely-accepted social and competitive dance. It is even featured in Dancing with the Stars. It’s a great partner dance for any occasion and can be performed to artists ranging from Glenn Miller to Ella Fitzgerald.
Interesting Facts
- Sometimes called the Jitterbug, the Lindy Hop is based on the Charleston and the Black Bottom.
- It is named after the newspaper headline, “Lindy Hops the Atlantic,” from 1927 – when Charles Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris.
- The Double Lindy and the Triple Lindy are variations of the dance.
